Pacific Islander Communities

I just wanted to let everyone know that I added a new Website to the “Sites We Like” section of this blog. It is titled, Pacific Islander Communities.

The group is based in Southern California and their goal is to:

“Share and provide a comprehensive resource for cultural, educational, business and health resources for all of our Pacific Islander people of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. We believe it is important to the survival of our cultures as well as our responsibility to our sons and daughters to teach them, and thereby perpetuate the identity, language and customs of our unique island nations.

We believe in sharing our resources and unifying our voices to retain our respective cultural heritages while at the same time adapting to our adopted cultures abroad.”

Island Culture Archival Support (ICAS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of records pertaining to the cultural identity of island peoples in Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia whose national and public archives, libraries, cultural centers, and business organizations are underprivileged, underfunded, and understaffed. The specific purpose for which this nonprofit corporation was formed is to support the needs of these South Pacific cultural heritage institutions by helping to preserve and make accessible records created for business, accountability or cultural purposes. The organization will endeavor to add value by providing resources or volunteers to advise, train, and work among island residents to support their efforts in building their future and preserving their collective memory through the use of modern archival techniques.
